SURVIVOR SPoT

Seamus (rhymes with “famous”) was a rescue beagle diagnosed with cancer (a mast cell tumor) when he was only two years old. Vets said that with surgery and chemotherapy he’d live maybe a year.  Three years later he was right by my side when I went through treatment for breast cancer.  His antics, his joy of life, and his stubbornness were hilarious, heartwarming, and ultimately profoundly inspiring.  I chronicled our journey through cancer together in my memoir “The Dog Lived (and So Will I)” which gave Seamus a forum to inspire dog lovers and cancer fighters around the world and he howled and charmed his way through four months of book tour events with me, never missing an opportunity to meet and greet his fans, and stealing more than a few treats and hearts along the way.

Seamus passed away on March 19, 2013 from a second battle with an unrelated cancer (lymphoma), leaving a heartwarming legacy and a hole in my heart that will never heal.   I am thrilled to see his memory live on in the Survivor Spot shirts and particularly moved that a part of the proceeds from the sale of the shirts will benefit other dogs fighting cancer, through donations to The Riedel & Cody Fund. Seamus was a true survivor and now his legacy will survive as well. AAARRRRROOOOOOOOOO!!

I’ve long admired the message and the art of Alicia’s “Be Your Own Spot” company.  I’m thrilled she’s chosen to honor my beloved beagle Seamus on her “Survivor Spot” shirt, letting his memory endure and helping other dogs diagnosed with cancer by donating a part of the sale proceeds to The Riedel & Cody Fund. Seamus was an extraordinary dog who survived cancer eight years longer than his prognosis and inspired me throughout my own battle with breast cancer.  Now, through Survivor Spot, my diabolically cute “Seamus the Famous” can continue to inspire others.  I’m very touched, and Seamus would give you a big “AARRRROOOOOOOOOOOOO.” Thank you, Alicia & Sydney!
